For reference, as I am writing this, our baby girl is still technically not supposed to be here, even though she is 4.5 weeks old. She ended up being born at 34 weeks and 2 days. This was after spending 3 nights in the hospital, and pushing for less than an hour. It was Tuesday afternoon, and my wife sent me a text essentially saying that she thinks her water had broken. In asking how she knew, she explained that she had wet underwear when she went to the bathroom, and it didn't smell like pee. We decided that it was best to go to the hospital on her way home from work, before we were scheduled to go to dinner with friends.
At the hospital, we checked into the ER and they sent down a nurse with a wheelchair for us. After being wheeled to labor and delivery, we were informed that a swab test would be given, and similar to a pregnancy test, if the second line on the test developed to match the control line, then we would be admitted to the hospital, and we wouldn't be leaving until she gave birth. Within 10 seconds of the swab being applied, the test showed as positive, and jokingly, our nurse informed us we would need to cancel our dinner plans. This was so early in the pregnancy that we didn't have any bags packs and weren't really ready for the process to start. After the news, we called our parents and informed them of what was going on. My wife and I have two dogs and a cat at home, so luckily my Mother in Law was able to stay at our house and take care of the animals for us. Our nurses informed us that my wife would be getting 2 steroid injections, 24 hours apart, and since her water had broken, would need to be on antibiotics to prevent any chance of infection.
After all of the family and friends were notified, and we were settled into the hospital, I headed home to grab all of our things that we may need, and to pick up a target order we made in order to survive our stay in the hospital. We truly had no idea what was to come, but we knew all of our plans were out the window, and we were along for the ride.
